Qualifications Based on Past Performance

Biodiesel Lab Setup

Dr. Keith has over 40 years experience as an analytical chemist and over 20 years of Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) experience. At Radian International he helped this company to register its analytical reference materials under the ISO-9000 Quality Management Program (which is quite similar to the BQ-9000 Program). Thus, he is eminently qualified to serve as an experienced consultant to help biodiesel labs to qualify for the National Biodiesel Boards (NBB) BQ-9000 Quality Management Program. In addition, Dr. Keith worked for over 7 years for U.S. EPA. He is currently working with several biodiesel companies to help them set up their laboratories and, ultimately, to register with the NBB BQ-9000 Quality Management Program - it usually takes at least a year to complete all of the detailed requirements. For more information visit the National Biodiesel Board website and the BQ-9000 Quality Management Program website.

Anti-terrorism Consulting

We helped to develop and conduct training involving location of Cchemical, Bbiological, and Rradiological (CBR) contaminants - a variation on environmental sampling and analysis - for a U.S. intelligence agency. We also produced the Chemical, Biological, and Radiological (CBR) Advisor - an expert knowledge system for emergency response and training - for U.S. EPA's Homeland Security Division; the CBR Advisor is a restricted software program that was released in December 2006. It provides instant information and advice for threat assessment, initial site evaluation, immediate actions, safe sampling and selecting the best methods for identification and analysis - even when little information on the threat agent is available! We also helped to develop a related database of special analytical methods for CBR agents and contaminants for EPA. Click here for more information on the CBR Advisor.

Environmental Monitoring Consulting

We worked closely with the QA Team of California's Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) to develop an expert system that writes a draft Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) guaranteed to be of superior quality and produced faster than manually-written QAPPs. The SWAMP Advisor is the first environmental expert system of its kind and is based on the framework of the Environmental Monitoring and Measurement Advisor (EMMA). EMMA, the world's first environmental monitoring expert system, was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in 2001.

Another large project involves working with U.S. EPA and the U.S. Geological Service (USGS) to develop and improve the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI) - the world's largest database of environmental analytical methods. NEMI is based, in part, on Dr. Keith's 1990's e-books on environmental methods. Under contract to the Green Chemistry Institute (GCI), and in conjunction with EPA and USGS, we have helped to develop greenness (environmentally friendly) profiles for the 800+ methods in NEMI and an expert system is being developed to provide rapid and consistent greenness profiles for all analytical methods.

Expert Witness Consulting

We are providing consulting services involving quality assurance and environmental monitoring for the State of Louisiana. We are also providing consulting, deposition & testimony services involving improperly stored waste at a waste site in Texas for a private company. Previous work has involved consulting to provide information for the Supreme Court in Nova Scotia, Canada, and numerous other cases involving private companies. Click here for more details.

Training, Workshops & Conferences

We have presented numerous courses and workshops on environmental monitoring and quality assurance and control (QA/QC) for U.S. EPA, the American Chemical Society, and private companies over the past 20 years. In addition, Quality System training was conducted for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safeguards Division in Vienna, Austria. Special courses on environmental sampling and analysis have also been provided to the Hong Kong Lab Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS), the Portugal Chemical Society, and the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD). And, for a classified intelligence agency, we helped to prepare and conduct special training on sampling and analysis for chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) agents in water, air, soil, and structural building environments. We also managed the annual National Environmental Monitoring Conference (NEMC) in Washington, DC for three years. Click here for more details.

Books (Printed and Electronic)

Many of Dr. Keith's publications are in traditional bound and printed formats and also as electronic books and databases. They have been published by firms such as John Wiley & Sons, CRC Press, ACS Books, Butterworth, Lewis Publishers, Instant Reference Sources, and others. Amazon.com is a convenient source of many of them. Click here to see some of those which are available from this commercial entity.
